Very informative and interesting, lisala. I especially like the facts about the beer. In traditional folklore, were leprechauns known for having pots of gold at all? And do you have any reccomendations for some traditional folktales or books about them, by chance?

I have to tell you that I am relieved about the whole corned beef thing; I am part Irish and never liked it. :) I can live with the alternative.

Now, do you know if the same thing could possibly be true for sauerkraut and Germans? Because my heritage is largely German and I can't stand the stuff...!

Yes, corn beef does seem to be a very american concept. I used to have corn beef heading to school (like i would a ham sandwich) till the BSE scare. Now i don't know anyone who eats it.
In regards to commercialisation of St.Patrick's day, I do think that we (Irish) encouraged alot of it too. It's huge tourism thing here - so brings in some nice dollars and of course, the goverment reopened the pubs in the 70s too.

Anyhoo refreshing post :)
